Who is conducting the study?
The survey is being conducted on behalf of contributing municipalities in the greater Edmonton region, as well as by Resource Systems Group, Inc. (RSG). RSG conducts market research on behalf of both public and private sector clients using software applications, smartphones, websites, surveys, computers, tablets, and other means of collecting data (collectively, “Research Tools”). The data RSG collects is governed by this privacy policy.
What are we collecting?
The snapshot of the information to be collected:
- About your household – types of house you live in, income, whether you own or rent, your monthly expenses on housing, number of vehicles, or bicycles.
- About each member of your household – race, gender, age, marital status, driver’s license, highest degree, work/student status, occupation/industry, work/school location.
- About each trip made by each member of your household – where they traveled (origin and destination of the trip), how they traveled (the mode of travel such as car, transit, bike, micromobility, rideshare, walk), why they traveled (work, school, shop, social, errands, family activities), when they traveled (start and end time of their trips), including precise locations, travel time, and travel mode.
- Contact information – for example, an email address or phone number for the purposes of sending survey reminders and distributing cheques.
- Computer settings – for example, screen size to optimize the survey for your device and your computer’s IP address and user agent string to identify your device when interacting with the survey.
RSG is committed to protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and security of your personal information. We will not disclose or share personal information we collect from you except as required by law or described in this Project-Specific Documentation and our privacy policy.
How are we using the data?
RSG and the participating municipalities will use your data to:
- Understand day-to-day travel across the region.
- Help the City of Edmonton propose practical transportation investments and prioritize the improvements that best fit residents’ needs.
- Contact you about the status of your survey and provide support.
- Contact you to provide a financial incentive for completion (if applicable).
Who do we share this data with?
RSG will share your data with:
- The project team at the City of Edmonton.
- Participating municipalities.
- An email automation software provider to issue emails for this survey.
- A call center to conduct survey support.
- A printing firm to print and mail survey materials.
RSG’s privacy policy does not apply to the practices of companies that we do not own or control, or to individuals that we do not employ or manage.
What financial incentives are offered for providing this information?
Upon your completion of the entirety of this survey, RSG will provide you a cheque valued at $20-$45, depending on how you complete the research tool, the scarcity of information concerning your demographic group, and the priorities of the City of Edmonton. This reward represents RSG’s good-faith estimate of the value of your information to the City of Edmonton, as calculated using (a) historical evidence regarding the value of data in similar surveys, and (b) the budget the client has given us for this project.

Is your participation voluntary?
The parties above agree that the participants in each project are volunteers, offering their participation freely, without pressure or coercion, and without promise or expectation of compensation from RSG.
Can you change your mind?
Yes. You may remove your consent or exercise your data rights by submitting a Data Privacy Request through our secure system.
Protection of Privacy Act (POPA)?
The City of Edmonton, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC) and the following regional Municipalities (Leduc County, City of Beaumont, Parkland County, City of Fort Saskatchewan, Strathcona County, City of Leduc, Sturgeon County, City of Spruce Grove, Town of Devon, City of St. Albert, Town of Stony Plain) will collect personal information for the purpose of the Household Travel Survey Program (Navigating Tomorrow) and will be used for forecasting future travel demand and planning transportation infrastructure in the region. Collection is authorized under section 4(c) of the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and is managed and protected in accordance with the Act. The City intends to input the information into an automated system to generate content or make decisions, recommendations or predictions in accordance with the City of Edmonton Generative AI Standard.
