Navigating Tomorrow: Edmonton Region Household Travel Survey
About the Survey
Your daily travel habits — when, where, why, and how you travel, and who travels with you — are invaluable to us. This information helps paint a comprehensive picture of how people get around the region – walk, bike, car, bus, rideshare – which will inform future investment decisions to improve the Edmonton Region’s transportation systems.
We value your participation in this survey. By sharing your travel habits, you’ll help us understand how people are using local roads, highways, public transit, bike lanes, and sidewalks and how we can improve them. If your household is one of those invited to participate, please share your input to ensure that your needs and those of your family and friends are considered in our regional transportation plans.
This survey gathers information about your daily travel and household details. City planners will use this data to make evidence-based decisions aimed at enhancing the transportation network and improving its accessibility for all residents. The survey does not use personal identifiers. Responses will be anonymized, and analyzed in aggregate.

Frequently Asked Questions
About the Survey
What is this survey all about?
This survey seeks to understand your day-to-day travel throughout the Edmonton metropolitan region: how you travel, where you go, how long it takes, and who travels with you. Your participation will provide a complete picture of travel patterns to better plan future transportation systems improvements in the region.
Who is sponsoring the survey?
This survey is being sponsored by the City of Edmonton, the City of Leduc, the City of St. Albert, the City of Fort Saskatchewan, the City of Spruce Grove, the City of Beaumont, the Town of Devon, the Town of Stony Plain, Parkland County, Strathcona County, Leduc County, Sturgeon County, and the Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC).
Why should I participate?
We’re counting on your participation to ensure that households like yours are fully represented in our regional transportation plans. Your input is crucial because only a small but diverse number of households are selected to participate in the study, and it will have a significant impact on investment decisions and future transportation plans. The information we gather today will shape the transportation systems of tomorrow.
Is the survey really trying to track and limit my free movements around the city and the region?
No, the study is not trying to limit your movements in any way. Charter 6 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects and ensures mobility freedom for all Canadians. The survey is NOT about restricting movement. Rather, it is the opposite. It collects data to ensure transportation planning meets community needs, addresses barriers, and makes the system inclusive and accessible. People will always be free to drive, walk, bike, or take transit wherever they choose. This survey aims to make it easier!
How was I selected to participate?
Invited households were selected at random from the greater Edmonton region. You must live in the region and receive an invitation letter to participate in the survey.
Participation
What do I get for participating?
You will receive a single cheque after all household members have reported their travel and finished their individual surveys. The amount you receive depends on how your household reports travel. If you report using the rMove smartphone app, your household will receive a minimum of $25, plus a bonus for each additional member in larger households who completes the seven-day survey. If you report online or by phone, your household will receive a single $20 cheque after completing the one-day survey.
What if I don’t travel much or my travel habits during the study aren’t my “typical” habits?
You should still participate! All travel (including no travel) is valuable, even short trips like walking the dog.
I was invited to use the survey smartphone app, rMove. How does it work?
Once you download and signup using rMove, it will log your trips for seven days. Each day, you’ll be asked to complete a brief survey about your travel habits and a trip survey for each trip you take. If applicable, adults in the household will also be asked to answer brief surveys about their children’s travel.
Does the rMove app capture all types of travel, including both pedestrian activity (like walking) and travel using vehicles (like cars, buses, or bikes)?
The rMove app tracks all your trips using your phone’s location services, so it will capture trips made by walking, jogging, biking, and taking vehicles, including cars and buses. Use of the LRT will also be captured.

How is my personal privacy protected?
The survey team is committed to protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and security of your personal information by adhering to industry best practices and legal requirements. These practices encompass secure data collection, transmission, storage, ownership, and destruction protocols.
We handle all information collected during the study carefully and make sure that we have clear consent and that your data remains anonymous.
Your personal information will not be disclosed or shared, except as mandated by law or as outlined in our privacy policy.
For further details, please refer to the study’s complete privacy documentation.
Why do you need to know my demographics, such as age, race, and income?
Travel habits are influenced by many household and demographic factors such as size of the households, age of household members, family structure, household income, types of activities, cultural background etc. To make sure the transportation system works for everyone, the study needs to collect demographic information such as age, race, and income along with the daily habits. Along with the daily travel habits, this additional information will help identify what factors influence the daily travel choice which will essentially inform decisions on future investments and develop an inclusive transportation system.
How are the results of the survey used?
This study’s results will enable planners from the participating agencies to understand travel patterns and behaviours. As technology and transportation methods evolve, these results will inform transportation investments, support competitive federal grant applications and prioritize regional investments.
Support & Payment
Can I remove a household member if they no longer want to participate?
The signup survey must be completed by all related adult household members to ensure accurate travel data. Once the survey is complete, individual members cannot be removed, as this is a household-based study and requires all related adults to participate.
If I drive for my job (example: delivery, bus, rideshare driver), do I have to track all my trips?
The rMove app tracks all your trips and generates a trip survey for each. To avoid receiving excessive trip surveys, users who travel frequently for work can disable app tracking during work hours and re-enable it for personal trips.
Why isn’t the app recording my trips?
Try restarting your phone to reset your location settings. This should allow the app to start recording your trips again.
Why don’t I have any surveys to answer even though I’m making trips?
Your trip surveys should populate when you open the rMove app. If you still don’t see any trip surveys to answer, please restart the phone.
When do I get my e-cheque?
Please allow 4-6 weeks for cheque processing after you have completed the survey.
What do I do if I haven’t received my e-cheque after 4-6 weeks?
If you have not received your cheque and it has been more than 4-6 weeks since your household has completed the study, please send us your mailing address and access code.
